A Note for January

January.

January feels hard. It’s cold and gray and slushy. We’re finding our footing again after the holidays, and maybe we’re finding our way towards a resolution or an intention. We’re tired, and not just from putting on so many layers and then taking them all off, over and over again. There is a long stretch of winter to go. It’s when the weariness of winter can settle over us, weighing us down.

If you practice asana, I invite you to find some ease on your mat. Whether you’re practicing at home or in a class - what happens if you choose the gentler option? Making that choice can feel awkward since we’re programmed to do more, work more, work harder. But just for now, I invite you to choose the gentler option. Give in to ease. Relax into ease. Exhale into ease.

Practice becoming more comfortable with ease. Learn to trust ease. Eventually, maybe, you’ll notice an invitation to the gentler option in your daily life. Eventually, maybe, you’ll accept it. Discover ways to add ease into your life. You need not always push yourself to the limit, each time, for each thing.

If a new year/new you feels impossible right now, come sit by me. How do we gather the energy for a burst of creation when the earth is frozen? We can rest here til spring, when nature blooms back into lush life, just like our ancestors did. Give yourself grace. Treat yourself with kindness. Remember patience. You’ve planted seeds. They will grow.
